Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.

Nice! 5v3j3v
Haha, nice, guys!
I was tinkering with this when Chris first released the first version of his PortableApps launcher. I kinda had it down, but I never could figure out a couple settings. When PA.c started doing the one app a day gig in December, I wondered when somebody would do NetHack. I mean, it's inherently portable to start with, so somebody just needed to do a launcher.
Still, this is awesome and everybody should have this classic on their portable hard drive or whatever you run PortableApps off of. I will be installing this when I get home.
I've played Hack before it was NetHack, first on a Commodore-Amiga 1000, and I've played it off and on for over 20 years. The graphics and game are updated, though. I do believe I beat it once, but that was before a ton of stuff in this release was added. If you play the PC game Deus Ex, and you want a general idea of how much this game has changed in the last 20 years, hack or to Alex Jacobson's computer and read the email his friend sent him about the state of NetHack in the, I think, 2070s. It's funny, but not too far-fetched considering how awesome NetHack is. In fact, only in the last couple years have I come to believe that we have finally reached a point where it could be done as a modern game with modern graphics (e.g. Xbox 360, PS3, or a PC beyond those specs). Diablo was basically a Hack clone, but it sacrificed so much; ditto for D2, though that went more in its own direction.
Hack, or whatever the kids call it now, is the pinnacle of what an RPG could be. Shame it's too hard for most people to learn and get into. Defeat is served swiftly and frustratingly, so much so that I don't blame anybody who doesn't like it.
Yes, I too like Nethack since 2r5d22
Yes, I too like Nethack since I played it on my Amiga but I was stuck to Moria that time since it offered a more intense experience. Today I play Nethack on my mobile phone an Angband (Moria spin off that runs pefrectly under xp) locally but never with that persistance like in those days.
It's good to have it as paf to play a short round now and then. And my tileset config is preserved in with the update. Great!
I agree. 2d5z4d
Love it.
